RM EASIROBOTICS LAB

I use the ProBot robotics lab in my third grade mathematics classes. Students work in groups and use the robot cars to explore the critical attributes of geometric figures.  We begin with free exploration and then move into programming the cars to draw squares and rectangles.  Students also program  the cars to draw different size angles, triangles, and other plane figures.  The cars allow students to work cooperatively leading to productive math discussions.  Third graders have programmed the cars to draw equilateral, isosceles, and scalene triangles, hexagons, pentagons, and octagons.  They explore patterns in the size of angles in each and have begun discussing supplementary and complementary angles which are concepts far beyond what is required by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

Using the robot cars promotes authentic engagement, mathematical discussion, increased comprehension of critical geometric attributes, and allows simple differentiation for students within one class.

"Imagine your sixth grade students asking for passes to come back to your classroom during their lunch, study hall, and staying until 4:30 everyday of the week Monday –Friday to do extra class assignments and learn how to design their own web pages.  That’s what happened to my 95 sixth graders when I introduced them to Honeycomb.  They were eager to have their own “MySpace” or “Facebook” accounts but were not old enough.  Through Honeycomb, which provides a safe environment to communicate with their friends and teachers, they were excited to learn how to safely create and manage their own web pages, and communicate with their friends online at school, at home, or anywhere they had Internet access. Read more here.

"We are currently using RM Easiteach and I use the wireless tablet (Classpad) as well.  The two teachers and myself have enjoyed using the products we have had for quite sometime now.  I write many of my own lessons to supplement our math program and I find that when I modify the content, the product is very engaging and quite addictive to my students.
